for lo, the eternal and sovereign luminous space
where rule the unnumbered stars,
is the air we breathe in
and the air we breathe out.
And in the moment betwixt the breathing in
     and the breathing out
is hidden all the mysteries of the Infinite Garden.

Look into the word “biodynamic”, and you will see that it comes from two words:     bio, meaning life   and    dynamic, meaning force.  It’s all about  the life force.

Our ancestors possessed an innate knowing of the interdependence of all life forms and instinctively practiced agricultural methods that reflected their reverence for this Earth and her inhabitants. For thousands of years, humans tilled the soil guided by the phases of the moon and the positions of the stars in the sky. Farms were small patches of cultivated land carved out of the wild, sustaining a diversity of crops and animals. But with modern times came modern methods.

Biodynamic methods are centered on a deeply personal relationship between the farmer and the farm, acknowledging that the earth is a living entity which is in dynamic communication with the forces of the cosmos. In order to raise the most nutritionally and vibrationally-loaded foods, the grower must take these forces into consideration while working with soil, plants and animals.

Since the Industrial Age, people have come to demand greater and greater dominance over the physical aspects of life and have, over time, come to ignore the invisible forces that enliven the natural world. This has led to large-scale factory farming practices which focus on the unnatural manipulation of plant and animal genes in order to produce ever higher yields of food and……. money. A blatant disregard for ecological systems of agriculture have depleted our soils of essential nutrients and beneficial bacteria, requiring the use of more chemicals and more life-depleting practices to force the soil to keep producing food. Biodynamics, on the other hand, returns us to the teachings of natural, regenerative methods of healing our Earth, bringing increased vitality to all living things.

Both Manna Rose and Manna Nectar are cared for and nurtured using biodynamic methods. While we incorporate many beneficial organic and permaculture practices, we also go over and above to include conscious consideration of planetary influences, spiritual and devic forces that affect plant growth. The use of the “biodynamic preparations” (specialized composts that are applied in homeopathic doses) are used to not only increase the health of soil and plants, but also to deepen the connection between the heavenly and the earthly – the stars and the soil.

All of our planting and cultivating takes into account the movement of the moon through the stars. We all know of the moon’s influence on the tides. The same force also runs through the water in our bodies, the soil and plants. Seeds planted and tended in the appropriate moon times germinate better, tend to grow stronger root systems, be more resistant to disease, have higher yields, are more nutritionally dense and simply taste exquisite!

Another goal of biodynamics is to source most of our fertilizers as locally as possible. Most of the community’s food and yard scraps are composted with biodymanic preps and returned to the garden soil. Manures come from local farms and live bacterial inoculants are fermented right here in our kitchens. Earthworms create a rich worm-casting fertilizer and our mineral-rich water flows through acequias directly from snowmelt in the Sangre de Cristos mountains. All of these local and natural amendments help to keep our carbon footprint to a minimum while revitalizing our precious soil.

Biodynamic soil supports healthy plants which feed people like us, who can then live up to their highest physical and spiritual potential. For as Japanese master farmer, Masanobu Fukuoka expressed, “’the ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings”
